MANZANILLO
FESTIVALS
Dances, competitions and rodeos are held from April 29 to May 1 during the Manzanillo fair, which commemorates the city’s promotion to a deep-sea port.
MUSEUMS
Visiting Manzanillo’s University Museum of Archaeology is an excellent way to explore the cultural past of the Mexican west. It displays over 1,800 figurines and dishes from the Comala, Capacha, Periquillos, Colima and Armería cultures, out of a collection of 18,000. Make sure you visit the reproduction of the two shaft tombs that correspond to the Comala phase that lasted from 300 to 500 AD. If you would like to take home a souvenir from Manzanillo, the Shell Museum carries a wide range of typical handicrafts made on the coast. You will also be able to watch artisans fashioning their beautiful craftwork.
BEACHES
If you decide to explore Manzanillo Bay, make sure you visit the beaches known as Ventanas, Las Coloradas, El Viejo, San Pedrito, Playa Azul, Las Hadas and La Escondida. Particularly worth visiting is the peaceful Las Brisas beach facing the bay. You can admire the sunset from the central pier in Manzanillo bay.
El Viejo Beach
Located on the other side of the hill on the western side of Manzanillo, this beach is surrounded by shrubs and palm trees and seldom populated. The main form of life here are the birds flying over the warm water. The beach has a gentle incline and the fine sand is gray.
Las Brisas Beach
Its soft, medium-textured, light brown sand, sloping beach and gentle waves invite you dive into its turquoise waters or sunbathe on the shore.
Las Coloradas Beach
The warm water laps over reddish colored stones that gave the beach its name (Colorado). The fine sand is dark gray and the incline is gentle. This beach is separated from El Viejo beach by big cliffs.
Las Hadas
The beach was called Las Hadas, meaning fairies, by seamen hundreds of years ago that discovered the phenomenon caused by the phosphorus in the sea that creates the impression of illuminated silhouettes dancing on the surface of the sea.
La Escondida Beach
As its name (Out-of-Sight) implies, this beach is half hidden away in the green hills facing the blue sea. It has good hotels, nice houses, and white-colored condominiums.
Playa Azul
The deep blue sea breaks onto the dark brown sands of this beach, located between Salagua and Las Brisas in regular-sized waves. The incline is gentle.
San Pedrito Beach
The party atmosphere at the rustic palm huts offering delicious seafood is in direct contrast with the calm sea. This beach, next to the town of Manzanillo, is almost 500 meters long.
Ventanas Beach
This place is alive with marine birds that nest between the plants and shrubs next to this 500-meter long beach. The water is warm, the incline normal, although there are a few stones. The sand is grayish in color.
