Ecoturism in Los Cabos

In wintertime, the western beaches of Cabo San Lucas are ideal for watching the arrival of whales in the Pacific, after they have swum thousands of miles.

Cabo Pulmo
This protected area, 63 km from San José del Cabo has the only coral reef in the state of Baja California. The reef attracts many colorful tropical fish and algae, and the whole place is a submarine national park with an area of 7,111 hectares. You can dive here without affecting the species living on the reef!

This park is a paradise for diving enthusiasts, since it contains one of the largest coral reefs in the peninsula.

San José Estuary
Located in the far south of the hotel zone. Bird lovers will enjoy this nature reserve, to which approximately 200 species from Río San José emigrate.

The San José Swamp
Located next to San José del Cabo, this area is a salt and fresh water lagoon separated from the sea by a small sandbar. This body of water covers an area of 50 hectares and large numbers of palm trees surround it. It is also inhabited by various species of birds, reptiles, and mammals.

FISHING

Fishing in Los Cabos

Los Cabos is a fishing haven known as the Marlin Capital of the World. There are more striped marlin caught wihtin 20 miles of Cabo San Lucas year round than any place in the world. Catches over 1000 pounds are not uncommon.

But marlin is not the only fish you can catch - dorado (mahi-mahi), yellowfin tuna and even wahoo, to name a few of them. The deep water canyons at the mouth of Cabo San Lucas harbor and the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez waters create favorable fishing conditions most of the year. Generally, the peak season for marlin is mid-October through December, but after January varying species run well each month.

Catch and release is the name of the game with the marlin and other trophy fish, but dorado and tuna are yours to keep. There are 500 fishing boats based in Los Cabos, from the moderately priced 20 to 24 foot pangas to custom-fitted pangas to custom-fitted state of the art luxury fishing yachts for hire. Charter arrangements can be made in advance through tour operators, local suppliers, hotels and fishing fleets. Half day, full-day or multi-day fishing excursions are easily booked, as are upscale trips offering live-aboard luxury accommodations and gourmet meals. Los Cabos anglers can expect a full-day trip to cost about $400 per boat, including tackle, bait and food. Half-day trips in smaller boats cost between $80 and $120.

El Chileno
Beautiful site located on the Nautical Corridor that includes an enormous strip of beach ideal for snorkeling.

Palmilla
Set in the nautical corridor amid spectacular surroundings, this beach is famous for its beauty, azure waters and white sand. Excellent for windsurfing.

SAILING
Cabo San Lucas Marina has 288 berths for sailing enthusiasts. Sailboat trips are available to the famous natural stone arch separating the Gulf of California or Sea of Cortés from the Pacific Ocean.

El Arco
These enormous blocks of rock are located at the junction between the Pacific and the Sea of Cortés. In addition to the spectacular landscape, it is quite common to see groups of sea lions and seals on the seashore, basking in the sun.

The Cabo San Lucas Marina
A rectangular, protective dike located between Médano Beach and the peninsula that terminates in the El Arco rocky promontory has 288 docks where you can rent boats for fishing or sailing. A particularly beautiful spot for these activities is Cabo Falso.

SNORKEL AND SCUBA

Diving enthusiasts continue to be fascinated by the mysterious cascades of sand that pour endlessly into the bottom of the sea, the beautiful black coral gardens and the rich marine fauna of the region.

This curious geological phenomenon discovered by Jacques Cousteau, which is linked to the San Andreas fault, occurs near the estuary of Cabo San Lucas.
